Introduction and origins
Christian Science is a religion based on the teachings of Christ Jesus. It takes its authority from the Bible, and its teachings are set out in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
Mary Baker Eddy grew up in a Christian home where there was a great love of the Bible. Much of her early life was spent in ill health and she failed to find permanent help through any of the remedial methods available to her. In 1866, after a serious accident, she was healed as she read about one of Jesus’ healings in the Bible. She spent the next few years searching the Scriptures for a positive rule of healing, which led her to the discovery of what she called the Science of Christianity, Christian Science.
The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879 ‘to commemorate the word and works of our Master (Christ Jesus), which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing’ and consists of The Mother Church (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, USA) and branch churches around the world.
Christian Science teaches that spiritual healing is the outcome of prayer and spiritual renewal. Its practice places full reliance on God for the cure of physical ills as well as the healing of sin and problems of every kind.
